Frost flower in Zoniën Wood

Ralph Vandiest, a reader of our stable mate deredactie.be, has photographed an extremely rare phenomenon in the Zoniën Wood in Sint-Genesius-Rode. Frost flower only occurs when a whole range of different factors are present at the same time and consists of thin threads of ice that form on dead limbs of oak and beech. It can grow to lengths of nine centimetres.
