"I had a feeling I would bump into Serena Williams"

In tennis, Belgium's rising star Alison Van Uytvanck will meet top seed and hot favourite Serena Williams in the opening round of the Australian Open in Melbourne. Four women will defend the Belgian colours in the singles tournament, while only one men was directly qualified for the main draw. He could be joined by two Belgian qualifiers.

20-year-old Van Uytvanck, a promising player, was drawn against Serena Williams. "I had a feeling this would happen", she told the VRT. "I told my father two days before the draw, but he wouldn't believe me. I told him 'you see!' "

It will be Van Uytvanck's first showing in the main draw. She will obviously start as the underdog, as she is ranked more than 100 places below Serena as the number 106 in the WTA rankings. "But that doesn't mean I don't believe in my chances. It would be wrong to start a match without this attitude. For the rest, I will enjoy the showing. I would like to take on the challenge from the 18-times Grand Slam winner on the Rod Laver Arena."

David Goffin is the 20th seed

The other Belgian women are also in for a tough challenge. Kirsten Flipkens (WTA-50) meets 11th seed Dominika Cibulkova, her doubles partner. Yanina Wickmayer, who dropped to 79 on the rankings, plays 33rd seed Anastasia Pavljuchenkova while An-Sophie Mestdagh (WTA-102) will have to try to move past Ekatarina Makarova, a top-10 player from Russia.

In the men's draw, David Goffin is the 20th seed. He will meet a qualifier in the opening round.
