Icy start closes E40 towards Brussels

The Brussels Liege motorway (E40) had to be closed to all traffic between Tienen and Heverlee for a while on Saturday for all drivers heading for the Belgian and Flemish capital following a spate of accidents on Belgium's icy roads.

Drivers were forced to quit the E40 and follow a diversion. Slip roads at Tienen and Heverlee were all closed. An accident also occurred on a stretch of motorway towards Liege obstructing part of the highway for a while.

Icy roads caused problems for drivers in many parts on Saturday morning. The photo above shows a car that skidded off the road in the Westhoek in West Flanders. In Geel in the Kempen District fire-fighters had to cut loose two people trapped in a car that had skidded off the road too.
