Footballer dies in hospital after heart failure

Less than two weeks since the death of the Sporting Lokeren player Grégory Mertens another young footballer has died after suffering heart failure. As we reported on Sunday, the Beerschot-Wilrijk left-back Tim Nicot collapsed with heart failure during the final of a friendly football tournament in Hemiksem, near Antwerp on Saturday.

He was resuscitated at the scene before being rushed to Antwerp University Hospital. He underwent an operation and was kept in an artificial coma.

However, his condition showed no improvement and he died with his family at his side on Monday morning. Tim Nicot’s family announced the death of the 23 year-old on his Facebook page on Monday.

Tim Nicot’s club Beerschot-Wilrijk will give the general public the chance to remember and pay their respects to Tim Nicot in the Olympic Stadium in Antwerp (also known as Het Kiel) between 6pm and 10pm on Sunday.
