Cowboy practices in second hand car sales

Inspectors from Belgium's economy ministry discovered that the law was being broken in half of all second hand car sales they checked. Infringements of the regulations were recorded at 403 sellers. Inspectors drew up 703 police reports. The figure is a record.

Inspectors focused on second hand car sales outside the traditional circuit of second hand car salesmen. 781 people offering second hand cars for sale received a visit. People offering cars for sale on the internet and those sticking a business card between your window were all checked.

Infringements of the regulations were recorded at 403 of the sellers. Inspectors drew up 703 police reports. The figure is a record.

Half the infringements involved cash payments above the legal 3,000 euro cash limit. In all some 13.7 million euros worth of payments above the legal limit were recorded involving 2,348 cars. Other infringements included not providing the legally required guarantee and fraud with the clock.

This is the first time that inspectors target the informal second hand car circuit. Fewer and fewer violations are being recorded in the conventional circuit.
