Electronic prices to be rounded too!

The Belgian government is expected to approve plans to allow traders to round prices to the nearest 5 eurocents even if the payment is being made electronically using a debit or bank card. The practice is already allowed for cash payments, though this can only happen when all you’re shopping is totted up.

The introduction of rounding prices to the nearest 5 euro cents was introduced to lighten our pockets of small change, but is now being expanded by Belgian finance minister Johan Van Overtveldt (Flemish nationalist). Until last year the Francophone socialist party had prevented the measure from being extended to electronic payments, but they now sit on the opposition benches in the federal parliament.

Only 5% of retailers are believed to be rounding prices at the minute, though retailers' organisations believe that this will now rise significantly because electronic payments are also covered.
