First pub closed for flouting smoking ban

For the first time ever a Belgian pub has been closed because the proprietor allowed punters to continue smoking in violation of Belgium's smoking ban. The Ghent pub has now been sealed for an entire month and the landlord has been fined 5,000 euros.

The landlord has already received 9 police reports about allowing smoking on his premises, but chose to ignore them all.

Paul Van Den Meerssche of the Belgian Health Ministry: "We hope this will encourage other café landlords to comply with the law. Too often we see that the law is not observed. There is a category of landlord who has no respect whatsoever for the health of his clients. Smoking and second hand smoke are extremely bad for your health."
