With Suarez, Ezekiel and Okaka in Sporting Anderlecht’s starting line-up it was clear that Coach Besnik Hasi want his team to go flat out on the offensive against the Azeri side Qarabag Agdam.
However, it were the Azeris that took the lead through Quintana. Their joy was short-lived though as Najar equalized for Anderlecht just two minutes later after some excellent work by Thielemans.
Qarabag Agdam had hardly had time to recover when Okaka made it 2-1 to Anderlecht on 3-2 minutes. Anderlecht can count themselves lucky that the Azeris weren’t given a penalty for shirt-pulling inside the box just before half-time.
The second half was at times mind-numbing with little of any consequence to report. The game ended 2-1 to sporting Anderlecht who finish 2nd in Group J with 10 points from 6 games. They with go into Monday’s draw for the next round of this season’s Europa League.
Over and out for Club
The first half of Club Brugge’s match away to the Danish side Midtjylland typified the West Flemings Europa League campaign as a whole: lackluster and under-par.
The Danes combined well and took a deserved lead when bungling by the Club keeper Bruzzese allowed Sisto to put the home side one up. Club Brugge was much better in the second half.
Subsitute Refaelov was a breath of fresh air. De fauw will be disappointed that his header was miraculously saved by the Midtjylland keeper Andersen. Club Brugge was dominant and scored a well-deserved equalizer when Vossen head home from a Vazquez shot on 69 minutes.
The West Flemings remained the better side. However, shots from Vazquez and Vossen went wide and the match ended 1-1. The result sees Club Brugge finish 3rd in Group D with 5 points from 6 games. Not enough to progress to the next round.
