Van Avermaet victorious in Omloop Het Nieuwsblad

Belgium's Greg Van Avermaet of the BMC cycling team has won this year's Omloop Het Nieuwsblad cycling race. Van Avermaet finished ahead of Peter Sagan of Slovakia and fellow Belgian Tiesj Benoot. Britain's Luke Rowe of the Sky team finished fourth.

Van Avermaet crossed the finish in Ghent with a time of 4 hours 54'12".

Luke Rowe shone on the Taaienberg, the "Tough Hill" and the highlight of the race, ahead of Van Avermaet, Benoot and Sagan who joined them during the descent.

Tom Boonen attempted to impress but was unable to match Sagan. Van Avermaet attacked Sagan in an early sprint racing to victory in one of the classic races of the Flemish spring cycling season.
