Antwerp residents in earthquake scare

The 'Zuid' area in Antwerp had a short earthquake scare on Sunday evening. However, while it seemed as if the earth trembled, the 'microseism' was in fact caused by explosions at the Scheldekaaien at the Scheldt docks, where major works are going on.

Fire services had been informed about the underground works, but the impact was apparently bigger than expected. Fire services and police had to reassure local residents on social media.

Antwerp Mayor Bart De Wever was not amused. "These are major works. Communication could have been better." The old Scheldekaaien are being refurbished. At the same time, old, unstable quay walls are being demolished and replaced.
