Belgium in Davis Cup World Group first round

Kimmer Coppejans (ATP 122) failed to win the final and deciding match of the weekend’s Davis Cup meeting with Croatia in Liège. He lost his match against Borna Coric (ATP 47) in three sets 6-7 (5/7), 2-6, 2-6. The result sees Belgium lose 3-2 overall and means that our male tennis team will have to take part in the play-off that will be held in September. Croatia will take on the USA in the quarter finals.

Both players were evenly-matched in the first set. The set went to a tie-break that was won 5/7 by Coppejans. However, it was a different story in a second set that ended 2-6 in Coric’s favour. The 19-year-old Croat went all out for victory.

Two breaks were enough to ensure that the set ended 2-6 to Coric. It was game set and match to the Croat and defeat for Belgium in the first round of the World Group. All a very far cry from last year, when Belgium played in the final of the Davis Cup against Great Britain.
