New peak in same sex marriages in Belgium

The number of people embarking upon a same sex marriage continues to rise in Belgium. Last year 1,968 same sex couples tied the knot, the highest figure in five years.

The figures from the home ministry show a steady rise from 1,717 marriages in 2013 and 1,898 in 2014.

Lawmaker Lahaye-Battheu: "If we look at the figures from the municipalities we notice that the highest number of same sex marriages involving two Belgians occurred in Antwerp: 118 last year. The highest number of same sex marriages involving a foreign partner was recorded in Brussels: 37".

7.4% of same sex marriages involving lesbians unembarked upon in 2013 have today broken down. For gay men the figure is only 4.7%.
