Last minute goal spares Standard’s blushes

In Sunday afternoon’s Belgian First Division game a late equaliser served to salvage a point for Standard de Liège against an enthusiastic Westerlo. Standard had appeared to be heading for a defeat at Westerlo. However, substitute Jonathan Legear scored in the 90th minute to make for a full time score of 2-2.

Santini opened the scoring for Standard on 6 minutes. However, Westerlo continued to produce some good football and their work was rewarded with a Acolatse equaliser on 32 minutes.

The equaliser knocked Standard for six. The home side had plenty of space to go flat out on the attack. On the stroke of half time Ganvoula put Westerlo 2-1 up.

Legear saves the day

Standard still had 45 minutes to salvage something from the match. However, they lacked inspiration and were unable to create much in the way of chances against a solid Westerlo defence.

Westerlo’s De Ceulaer came close to making it 3-1. However, he missed and it remained stayed 2-1. The match seemed to heading towards a win for Westerlo. However, defensive blunders gave Jonathan Legear the opportunity to make it 2-2 just before the final whistle.
