Genk and Gent both through

It was a good evening for the Belgian teams competing in the penultimate qualifying round for this season’s Europa League. After a 5-0 win in the home leg of their tie against the Romanian side Vitorul Constanta a goalless draw in Romania was more than enough to see the AA Gent qualify for the play-ff round round. Meanwhile Racing Genk’s 2-1 win away at Cork City made for a 3-1 aggregate score and qualification for the Limburgers.

Cork started strongly. However it was Genk that took the lead through Buffel (photo) after some excellent work by Bailey.

Genk turned things up a gear Kebano and Bailey both had chances to widen the score, but good work by the Cork keeper McNulty served to deny them.

However, Dewaest’s effort three minutes before half time found the back of the net. Cork would now need to score 4 goals in 45 minutes if they were to qualify.

However this didn’t dishearten the Irish. They created plenty of chances and can feel aggrieved to have only scored once through Bennett on 64 minutes.

The result sees Racing Genk go in to the hat for the play-off round of the Europa League.

Goalless draw more than enough for Buffaloes

After their 5-0 win in the home leg, the away leg of AA Gent’s qualifying round tie against Vitorul Constanta was never going to be much more than a formality.

Gent played the game with two youngsters Siebe Horemans and Yannick Thoelen making their first team debuts and the new additions Jérémy Perbet and Emir Kujovic up front and Rob Schoofs in place of the Golden Boot Sven Kums in midfield.

The team lacked routine and it showed. Kujovic’s effort was the only real big scoring opportunity of the first half. The second half saw few or any chances with the exception of Iancu’s shot for Vitorul Constanta.

0-0 on the night and 5-0 on aggregate. AA Gent go in the hat for the play-off round.
