Zulte Waregem make it three in a row

In Sunday afternoon’s Belgian First Division game Zulte Waregem made it three wins out of three. Francky Dury’s men now top the league after a 1-0 home win against Standard de Liège and are the only side to have taken full points from the first three matches of the new season.

Standard started on the attack however, after Dossin’s effort the visitors seemed to fade away. A self-confident Zulte Waregem created chances and provided their fans and the neutral supporters with an enjoyable afternoon’s football.

The home side took a well-deserved lead on 22 minutes when Derijck (photo below) headed home a Lepoint free-kick. Neither the Standard keeper Jean-François Gillet nor the Standard defence were entirely blameless for the goal.

Zulte Waregem went from strength to strength. Baudry hit the inside of the post from a Hamalainen pass, but to the relief of Standard the ball didn’t go in.

It was more of the same at the start of the second half with Zulte Waregem giving nothing away. However, as the half progressed the home side slowed things down and stopped pushing forward. This almost proved fatal and Bossut was forced to produce a good save from a powerful header from Tetteh.

Standard tried to draw level through a final offensive later. However, Zulte Waregem was awake again and the home side succeeded in keeping all three points for themselves. The result sees Zulte Waregem with 9 points from 3 games. Standard de Liège has 4 points.
