“Exhausted” Thiam withdraws from high jump

Belgium’s gold medal winner in the heptathlon Nafi Thiam has announced that she will not be taking part in the women’s high jump competition at the Rio Olympics. Nafi Thiam, who will be 22 on Friday, wrote on Twitter (see below) VRT Sport that “The heptathlon was main goal”.

Last weekend Nafi Thiam put in an excellent performance to take gold in the heptathlon with no fewer than 5 personal bests. She excelled in the high jump, jumping 1.98 metres.

She had hoped to compete in the qualification series for the high jump on Thursday. However, she has now withdrawn saying that she is “mentally and physically exhausted and will not be competing in the qualifying series for the high jump”.
