Good start for Van Der Plaetsen, disappointment for Ketbi

A number of Belgian athletes were in action on Wednesday afternoon. While there was disappointment for our taekwondo hopeful Si Mohamed Ketbi, Thomas Van der Plaetsen got off to a good start in the decathlon. Rennée Eyken too put in a good performance in the 800 metres to qualify for Friday’s semi-final.

Thomas Van Der Plaetsen got off to a good start in the decathlon. After two events he is 13th on 1,783 points. The East Fleming came in 6th in his series the 100 metres with a personal season’s best time of 11.24 seconds.

This earned him 808 and 29th place out of 32 overall. He achieved another season’s best in the long jump jumping 7.66 metres, good for 4th place and 975 points.

Ketbi knocked out in first round

There was disappointment for our 18-year-old medal hopeful Si Mohamed Ketbi. In the taekwondo competition the teenager from Schaarbeek (Brussels) was unable to make it past the first round. His opponent, the Australian Safwan Khalil, proved too strong for the Belgian and he was beaten 8-1.

Renée Eykens through to semi-final

Renée Eykens put in a good performance in the 800 metres series. The European Junior Champion finished 4th in her race with a time of 2 minutes 0 seconds. This put her in 8th place overall, good enough for a place in Friday’s semi-final.
