Expect quicker smog alerts!

The Belgian regions of Flanders and Brussels intend to alert their populations to particulate matter levels when they reach 50 micrograms per cubic metre of air. Until now the public was only alerted when particulate matter levels reached 70 micrograms per cubic metre of air.

Frans Fierens of the interregional environment unit explains that the new alert level equals the European daily maximum norm. This norm may only be exceeded 35 days a year.

The alert is helpful for people who are sensitive to air pollution. The so called smog alarm alerts are important because they also bring with them traffic restrictions including speed restrictions on the motorways.
