Record number of travellers caught with large sums of cash

Last year, the Customs Department caught a record number of travellers carrying large amounts of money red-handed. Over 1,600 cases were reported to the money-laundering unit, a number which is 400 up on the year. Most cases are linked to transfers into the European Union.

If you carry more than 10,000 euros in cash with you, you have to report this to the authorities. Those who don't, risk a fine. The so-called "cash team" at Brussels Airport imposed fines on 310 travellers last year, De Tijd reports.

Customs officers will step up targeted checks on other airports, on cruises and international buses.
