Avoid the jams with the 'Water Bus'!

The Port of Antwerp hopes to make its contribution to tackling congestion on the roads in and around Antwerp by encouraging commuters to take the water bus to work!  The port is investing 30 million euros to run six new water buses.

Three of the new water buses will run on electricity and will operate on the Albert Canal with stops at Wijnegem and Schoten.

Marc Van Peel is city cabinet member for the port: "The canal runs parallel to the E313 motorway that is dogged by congestion.  That's something you won't experience on the water!"

The water buses enter service next year.  Three extra buses will also run on the River Schelde (Scheldt).  They will connect the Steenplein with the Left Bank continuing on northwards to the Scheldedijk and the Ketenislaan.   Today thousands of commuters use the water bus that already operates between Hemiksen, Kruibeke and Antwerp.
