Belgium to sit on UN Security Council

Belgium will sit at the top table of world diplomacy during 2019 and 2020 after our country was voted onto the UN Security Council on Friday afternoon. Belgium will sit as a non-permanent member for a period of two years.

Intense diplomatic lobbying in recent days appears to have paid off. Of the 188 UN member states that voted, 181 voted for Belgium’s candidature. This is much more than the two-thirds majority that was needed four Belgium to become a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council.
