In 2017 20% more arrears re-payment plans were started than in 2016. This is on top of the 25% increase in 2016 compared with 2015. Never before has the number of families on arrears repayment plans been so great.
The reasons more and more families are finding themselves unable to pay their energy bills is an increase in the cost of electricity. The amount payable for electricity distribution has gone up considerably in some cases.
A re-payment plan halts the procedure used by an energy company to terminate a supply contract with a customer due to non-payment or late payment. Last year the number of contacts terminated due to payment issues rose by 3%. Meanwhile, the number of budget meters has hardly risen.
