Leonard Tunnel re-opens after inspection

There is good news for commuters as the Leonard Tunnel on the Brussels orbital motorway has re-opened. The tunnel had been closed after a routine inspection found that the concrete in the its ceiling was damaged in several places.

The closure of the tunnel that is situated at the busy interchange between the Brussels orbital motorway and the E411 Brussels to Luxemburg motorway lead to between half an hour and an hour’s worth of extra delays during this morning’s rush hour.

The areas of damaged concrete were removed while the tunnel was closed. There were never any stability issues concerning the tunnel. Work to replace the damaged concrete will be carried out over the next few months.

A complete renovation of the tunnels had already been planned and a study to this end will commerce later this year. The work is due to start in 2022.
