Over 1,400 volunteers have participated in the annual "Ommegang" in the historic centre of Brussels. The event is a kind of re-enactment to remember the entry of emperor Charles V and his son Philip II in 1549. It has been taking place each year since 1930. Though he had a vast empire, Charles V had a strong bond with Brussels. It was a rich area, and had big tax revenue potential, so it was crucial for Charles V to stay on good terms with Brussels.
