Flemings honoured on national holiday

The Flemish government has bestowed awards on 14 Flemish citizens in recognition for their exceptional meritorious behaviour in favour of Flanders or their exceptional talents that have contributed towards a positive image of Flanders.  No cash or privileges are linked to the awards.

Those honoured include Imam Khalid Benhaddou, author Gaston Durnez, captain of industry Michèle Sioen, weather lady and climate expert Jill Peeters and cardiologist Pedro Brugada.  The award ceremony was held at the Errera House, the official home of the Flemish government in Brussels.

Those honoured include broadcasting legend Lutgart Simoens (90).  She said: "I learned you have to listen and show respect and understanding for the views of others."
