Port of Antwerp boasts record first half

The Port of Antwerp enjoyed a historic high in the first six months of the year, as the record first quarter was followed by an excellent second quarter. This led to a rise of 6.5 percent on the year in terms of cargo handling from January to June.

In a press statement, the port says that a total of 118,648,143 tonnes of goods were handled. Container traffic is the main contributing factor, with a rise of 8.2 percent on the year.

This is mainly thanks to the good economic climate, triggering a strong growth in consumption goods, automotive parts and chemicals. Compared to the same period last year, trade with north America grew 10.3 percent, though last year was relatively weak. Trade figures with Asian partners were 3 percent up.
