Twenty-one injured in Amsterdam-London bus crash

A score of people were injured in a coach accident on the Brussels-Ostend motorway this morning.  The medical disaster plan had to be implemented. Two people were seriously hurt.

The accident happened in the dead of night.  The coach driver spotted the roadworks at Aalter too late and drove into several blocks of concrete and the bus landed on its side.

The coach was travelling from Amsterdam to London with some twenty people on board.  Many of the passengers are Irish, Dutch and British nationals.

Two passengers had to be freed from the wreckage by firefighters. One, a woman,  is in a bad way. The remaining 19 injured were ferried to local hospitals with light injuries. Passengers discharged from hospital were taken to the sports hall in Aalter (East Flanders).  Some intend to continue their journey.  Others are being taken home.

The carriageway has meanwhile been cleared.
