Red Panthers knocked out after penalty shoot out

Our national women’s hockey team has failed to make it to the quarter finals of the Hockey World Cup in London. After having made it through from the group stage for the first time in 40 years, Belgium’s women lost out to Spain for a place in the quarter finals in a penalty shoot-out.

The match had ended goalless and went to a penalty shoot-out. The Spanish team was just that little bit more efficient converting three of their five penalty strikes. Belgium scored two penalties. So it was over and out for last year’s European silver medallists.

After a 6-3 win against Japan (FIH-12) and 1-1 draws against Australia (FIH-5) and New Zealand (FIH-4) Belgium finishing second in Group D. Spain (FIH-11) were third in Group C.
