Gold for Emma Plasschaert at World Sailing Championships

Emma Plasschaert has become the women’s champion at the World Sailing Championships in Aarhus, Denmark. She entered the medal race as leader and 5th place in the race was sufficient to see her take 1st place overall.

It is the first time in the career of the 24-year-old from Ostend (West Flanders) that she has succeeded in becoming World Champion. Before the medal race got under way Emma Plasschaert was already certain of taking silver. In the end she took gold in what was the crowning glory of her career so far.

She started the race with 11 points to spare over her nearest rival, the Dutch Olympic Champion Marit Bouwmeester. A top 5 spot or finishing at least 6 places higher than Bouwmeester would ensure her of gold.

After a slightly sluggish start, Emma Plasschaert picked up towards the end of the race finishing strongly and leaving her Dutch rival with no chance. The bronze medal was for the Danish sailor Anne-Marie Rindom.
