"Higher fines for lorry and bus drivers making phone calls when driving"

The traffic safety institute VIAS is calling for higher fines for lorry drivers and bus drivers using their telephone behind the wheel, as it turns out that last year saw more of these cases.

Police figures show a surge in the number of fines for professional drivers of trucks and buses last year. In fact, this number has risen to almost 20 truck drivers each day. Those being caught red-handed and fined, represent just the tip of the iceberg.

Fines are at 116 euros at present, but if the offence is upgraded to 3 coming from 2, this could become 174. "6 in 10 heavy accidents involving lorries happen when they crash into a queue of cars. The consequences of accidents with trucks or buses are always grave", says Stef Willems of VIAS, who are calling for higher fines.
