Peace Festival in Sint-Niklaas

The fair city of Sint-Niklaas (East Flanders) is holding its annual Peace Festival this weekend to mark the anniversary of the end of the Second World War.  As befits the capital of Flemish ballooning balloons once again play a prominent part in the festivities.

Over a hundred thousand well-wishers are expected to see the balloons take off from the market square, the biggest market square in the whole of Belgium.  For the first time in several years the weather omens are good and all planned balloon trips are expected to go ahead according to schedule. The balloons are headed for Zele, Berlare, Hamme, Moerzeke and Dendermonde.  It will be interesting to see if they all get there.  The weather is fine for ballooning.  A north-westerly is blowing but there is relatively little wind.

Saint Nick's Peace Festival also means music.  Dozens of concerts are planned.  Visitors can also enjoy a Balloon run, an old skool fair as well as a world market.  This is a free festival and open to all.
