Rush hour chaos on the Brussels Orbital

A number of accidents on the anti-clockwise carriageway of the Brussels Orbital Motorway have led to its closure near to the Jette interchange. The accidents have also led to delays on the clockwise carriageway as drivers there slow down to look at what has happened.

At one point jams caused by the so-called “rubber-necking” stretched back as far as Ternat (Flemish Brabant) on the E40, adding around 40 minutes to journey times. There are also delays on the A12 Antwerp to Brussels motorway as a knock-on effect of the accidents. One person is reported to have died.

The closure of the motorway has resulted in near grid-lock condition on roads in municipalities that are near-by such as Jette, Ganshoren, Wemmel and Strombeek.

Salvages crews are currently at the scene to clear the wreckage.
