Car-free Sunday in 60 municipalities in Flanders and Brussels

The third Sunday of September is traditionally car-free Sunday in the whole of the Brussels-Capital Region and many towns and municipalities in the 5 Flemish provinces. The Car-free Sunday also marks the start of Mobility Week, during which we are encouraged to think about our transport options.

As well as the 19 municipalities that make up the Brussels-Capital Region 41 Flemish municipalities are also car-free on 16 September. Never before have so many municipalities taken part.  

Leuven (Flemish Brabant) was car-free on 26 August. The West Flemish town of Poperinge staged a car-free day on Sunday 2 September, while Turnhout (Antwerp Province was car-free last Sunday.  

The following cities, towns and municipalities are car-free tomorrow (16 September): Aalst (East Flanders), Antwerp, Asse (Flemish Brabant), Beveren-Waas (East Flanders), Bilzen (Limburg), Bruges (West Flanders), De Pinte (East Flanders), Deinze (East Flanders), Dendermonde (East Flanders), Diksmuide (West Flanders), Ghent (East Flanders), Gingelom (Limburg), Grobbendonk (Antwerp Province), Haacht (Flemish Brabant); Haalert (East Flanders), Ham (Limburg), Hamme (East Flanders), Hasselt (Limburg), Herental (Antwerp Province), Ichtegem (West Flanders), Ieper (West Flanders), Kortrijk (West Flanders), Kruibeke (East Flanders), Mechelen (Antwerp Province), Melle (East Flanders), Merelbeke (East Flanders), Nijlen (Antwerp Province), Ninove (East Flanders), Ostend (West Flanders), Oud-Turnhout (Antwerp Province), Roeselare (West Flanders), Rotselaar (Flemish Brabant), Sint-Niklaas (East Flanders), Tienen (Flemish Brabant), Vilvoorde (Flemish Brabant), Vorselaar (Antwerp Province), Wezembeek-Oppem (Flemish Brabant), Wijnegem (Antwerp Province), Zedelgem (West Flanders) and Zelzate East Flanders.

The East Flemish municipalities of Herzele and Zottegem will be staging car-free Sundays on 29 September, while Kontich (Antwerp Province) will be the last municipality to hold a car-free Sunday this year on 29 September. Numerous events are being organised to mark Car-Free Sunday.
