Man charged with the murder of a Belgian tourist in Canada
A man has been charged with the murder of a Belgian tourist who was killed while hitchhiking in the Canadian province of British Columbia. The Anglophone Canadian public broadcaster CBC reports that Sean Ryan William McKenzie was charged Saturday morning local time. He is accused of having murdered 28-year-old Amelie Sakkalis at Boston Bar, a small town around three hour’s drive from Vancouver.
Ms Sakkalis's body was discovered north of Boston Bar on 22 August. Detectives said that Ms Sakkalis had been hitchhiking to Vancouver.
The day before her body was found, she had is posted a message on Facebook in French, looking for a ride. She was asking if anyone was going to Vancouver, or even Tofino, from Penticton.
On the day of her death, she posted on a Facebook group called Guide du Croutard, for French-speakers in Vancouver, asking if anyone had a place to stay because the hostels in Vancouver were full.
