The Brussel to Mumbai service was Brussels Airline first step into the Asian market. The airline saw a gap in the market after the Indian airline Jet Air had moved its services to the subcontinent from Zaventem to The Netherland’s principle airport at Schiphol, near Amsterdam.
The service started in late March 2017 but will come to an end just 21 months later. The last Brussels Airlines flight will leave Zaventem for Mumbai on 6 January next year. The last flight from Mumbai to Zaventem will take off on 7 January 2019.
Brussels Airlines Kim Daenen told the Brussels regional news platform Bruzz that "Passenger numbers were ok, but the route wasn’t as profitable as it should have been”.
Ms Daenen added that it has already said repeatedly that Brussels Airlines can only grow if profitability improves.
"This mean that choices have to be made.”
Customers that had booked to fly with Brussels Airlines to Mumbai after 6 January 2019 will be offered flights with an alternative carrier.
