Alert as storm sweeps across Belgium!

VRT's weatherman Frank Deboosere is urging us all to take care as the centre of a depression sets its course across our country today.  Gusts will reach 70 to 80 km/hour in most parts.

The Met Office has issued a code yellow alert for the coast and the inland provinces of Liège, Namur and Luxembourg.  As the centre of the depression is passing through Belgium wind speeds shouldn’t be too worrying.  Still in Luxembourg Province gusts of up to 100km/hour are forecast.

In Antwerp the heavy rainful has led to disruption on the orbital ring road with water standing half a metre high in parts.

Frank Deboosere: "We're expecting an awful lot of rain: dozens of litres per square metre in some spots. The leaves of autumn are expected to fly through the air!"

Precautions are being taken in several areas: public parks are closed in Brussels, Leuven and Geraardsbergen.  The 1722 help line for people in difficulty in a non-urgent predicament has been activated.  In Ghent the Parklife event has been abandoned.
