Belgian Cats go down fighting against the Americans

Our national women’s basketball team the Belgian Cats have lost their semi-final game at the Women’s World Basketball Championships in Tenerife. The Belgian’s didn’t go out without a fight though and put in an impressive performance against the favourites to win the tournament, the United States. Prior to their semi-final match against Belgium, the Americans had won their 73 previous games.

There was no question of stage-fright on the part of the Belgian Cats and they got off to a great start in the first quarter that they won 26-21.

However, slowly but surely the Americans took control of the game both defensively as well as offensively. The second quarter ended 19-13 in the American’s favour, making for a half time score of Belgium 39 – 40 USA.

The Americans displayed their superiority during the second half second half. This was more than evident during the 3rd quarter that they took 33-18. The Americans went into the 4th quarter 16 points in front.

With today’s final and play-off match for 3rd place in mind, both coaches decided to rest a number of key players for the 4th quarter. The 4th quarter ended 20-20, making for a final score of Belgium 77 – 93 USA. The Belgian Cats will take on Spain later today for 3rd place and a bronze medal. Our woman already beat Spain in the group stage.
