Bad air quality: car ban in Brussels!

The Brussels regional authorities have released details of a new emergency plan that will be implemented when pollution peaks.  Measures include more information, free public transport and a ban on the use of the car in the event of a severe deterioration in air quality.

The Brussels environment department operates several measuring points across the region.  An alarm is triggered when pollution thresholds are exceeded.

First more information is given.  If the situation persists for two days extra measures are taken.  These include free travel on public transport and the use of Villo city bikes.  In exceptional circumstances when there is an awful lot of pollution cars are banned unless they accommodate three people at the same time.  Drivers with mobility issues too will still be able to drive.
