Female victim of Kortrijk double murder identified

One of the victims of the double murder in a student house in the West Flemish city of Kortrijk has been identified. She is a 19 year-old woman that came her from Russia. She was killed together with her 18 year-old Afghan boyfriend. Both victims were stabbed to death.

The 19-year-old woman lived in Kuurne, just outside Kortrijk, but was staying with her Afghan friend at the student house when they were killed. The 18-year-old Afghan had been living in Belgium for three years.

The police were able to detain the suspected killer, a 20 year-old Iranian, when he went to hospital for treatment to cuts on his hands. He also lived in Kortrijk in another student house.

Motive remains a mystery

It was on Monday morning that cleaners at the student house first found the 18-year-old Afghan unconscious on the ground floor of the building.

The emergency services were called, but the young man had already passed away by the time they arrived. Blood was found on the handle of the building’s front door.  

Later, a second body that of the 19-year-old woman, was found on the third floor. The Iranian suspect was caught later on Monday. His motive for the killings is not yet known.
