Gazette van Detroit disappears after 104 years

The last edition of the newspaper for Flemings in Canada and the US appears in December.  At present the Gazette as it is affectionately known is only published online.  The last paper version appeared three years ago.

Some 900 people or bodies still subscribe to the publication.  It's been touch and go for some time.  In 2006 the Gazette escaped a bankruptcy thanks to a grant from the Flemish government and a sponsorship action.

Camiel Cools from Moorslede published the first edition in 1914.  The readership mainly consisted of emigrated West Flemings.  The westerly province was plagued by great unemployment and many West Flemings found work in the Detroit car industry or in tobacco cultivation in Ontario, Canada.
