New aliens law: 195 foreigners lose residence permit

Nearly two hundred people have seen their residence permit withdrawn since the introduction of the new aliens legislation in Belgium eighteen months ago.

The new law tightened up the rules allowing the rescinding of residence permits belonging to people who were born in Belgium or who arrived here before the age of twelve for a first time.  The first permits were withdrawn last May.

The Belgian asylum and migration secretary Theo Francken took to Twitter to announce that so far the residence permits of 195 foreign nationals had been withdrawn noting that "criminal foreigners were NOT welcome here".  Eighty of this number were either born here or arrived in Belgium before their 12th year.
