Late goal denies league-leaders victory

In Sunday afternoon’s Belgian First Division games Racing Genk missed out on the opportunity to go 5 points clear at the top. A stoppage time equaliser by Standard’s Luyindama saw the Limburgers return from Liège with just one, rather than all three points.

Standard had found the back of the net during the first half, through Emond (photo below). However his goal was disallowed as Laifis was adjudged to be off-side by the VAR.  Prior to that there had been (half) chances for Standard through Emond and Cimirot.

However, generally speaking Racing Genk looked the more dangerous side during the first half with the Standard keeper Ochoa needing to be at his best to save a shot from Malinovski and to block off Ndongala’s path to goal. Standard too created chances as the half wore on with Emond’s disallowed goal being an example of this. A little later Emond saw a great scoring opportunity end up in the arms of the Racing Genk keeper Vukovic.

Luyindama denies Genk victory

Standard pushed forward earlier in the second half. However, the unfortunate Emond was unable to find the back of the net.

Gradually Genk started to take control, but Ochoa was on hand to deny Malinovski. Just as the tiredness was starting to show among both teams, Pozuelo’s pass set the previously invisible Samatta free.

Finally Ochoa was beaten and Genk were one-up. However, just as the league leaders thought that victory was theirs Luyindama put Standard level and the match ended 1-1. Racing Genk remain 3 points clear at the top of the Belgian First Division with 30 points from 12 games. Standard de Liège are 6th with 20 points.
