Flemish Christian democrat politician Steven Vanackere succeeds Marcia De Wachter, who leaves the bank after a career spanning thirty years. She was recently elected as a local councillor in Overijse (Flemish Brabant).
Mr Vanackere served as finance minister and deputy PM under PM Elio Di Rupo. He holds a degree in law and in economic sciences. Nationale Bank governor Jan Smets is set to retire soon. He will be succeeded by the current deputy governor Pierre Wunsch, viewed as a francophone liberal.
