Club Brugge win Champions League game in style

The Belgian League Champions Club Brugge have enjoyed their first Champions League victory in 13 years. They beat the French Ligue 1 side AS Monaco 0-4 in Monaco on Tuesday evening. Despite a strong start AS Monaco simply faded away and was punished by a Club Brugge side that was deadly efficient in front of goal.  

With Schrijvers out through injury the Club Brugge Coach Ivan Leko brought in Vormer. In goal Horvath won the coach’s favour over Letica and proved his worth with a few good saves during the first 15 minutes. Diop had Monaco’s best chance.  

At the other end Club Brugge scored from almost every attack. Vanaken (photo, below) opened the scoring for Club Brugge on 12 minutes. 7 minutes later they were awarded a penalty for hands inside the box. Vanaken scored from the spot kick and it was Club Brugge were two-up after just 17 minutes of play.     

Wesley’s goal on  24 minutes was a sight for sore eyes. He was sent in deep by Vormer cut through to the inside and torpedoed the ball into the far corner of the goal. .

A superfluous second half saw Monoco have the lion’s share of possession, but never really threaten the Club Brugge goal.

The Monaco Belgian Youri Tielemans gave Club Brugge’s Ruud Vormer a scoring opportunity on a plate. The Dutchman didn’t squander it either and it was 0-4 to Club Brugge with 5 minutes to play. 

The result leave Club Brugge with 4 points from 4 group stage games. AS Monaco have 1 point.
