Unemployment continues to fall

Unemployment in Flanders continues to fall. According to figures released by the Flemish Employment Department earlier this week, unemployment in the region is now 8.2% lower than it was this time last year. Unemployment in Flanders has fallen continuously for the past three years.  

The Flemish Employment Minister Philippe Muyters told journalists that “The fall is apparent in all age categories”. Furthermore, there has also been a fall in the number of long-term unemployed. Unemployment among Flemings with foreign roots has also seen a year-on-year drop of 7.9%. Meanwhile, the number of vacancies continues to rise.

Youth unemployment (-25) has fallen by 8.2%. The fall among those between 25 and 50 was greater still at 10.8%. However, the fall in unemployment among those over 50 was just 3.5%.

Meanwhile the fall among the long-term unemployed was 7.1%, while the fall in the number of unemployed people with low levels of academic attainment was 8.7%.
