Belgian blow-job scene too hot for Netflix

The movie ‘Girl’ is a hit in Belgium, but also in the US.  The film will soon be distributed via Netflix, but in a special cleaned up cut suitable for the more prudish US market.

Producer Dirk Impens is keen to stress that only two, maybe three and at most four scenes, will have to be changed to suit American sensitivities.  Talks on what exactly will have to be changed are underway with Netflix.  Some here have called this American censorship!  It is believed a scene involving a blow job or oral sex and a second scene in which actor Victor Polster appears nude are most at issue.

Dirk Impens explains that Netflix is an enormous business with a high visibility and consequently acts with caution in a puritanical and divided country: "They don't want to be associated with kiddy porn."

Mr Impens adds that Netflix is keen to be linked to  ‘Girl’ as a potential Oscar winner.

"We are looking for compromise.  Room to negotiate is small.  The contract is as thick as a telephone directory (for our younger readers: a large tome listing people's telephone numbers) and as a result you have little say on the matter."

"Netflix is seeking a slim lined and censored version and that hurts director Lukas Dhont, who is currently in LA."

The Academy that decides over the Oscars will see the original version.

‘Girl’ is the story of a boy eager to become a ballerina.  It has already won four prizes at the Cannes Festival and will form a Belgian entry to the Oscars next year.
