Champions beaten at home by Zulte Waregem

In the first of this weekend’s Belgian First Division games, the reigning league champions Club Brugge lost 1-3 at home against Zulte Waregem. The result sees Zulte Waregem’s recovery continue. Francky Dury’s men have now taken 9 points from their last 4 games and are now 5 points clear of the bottom club Sporting Lokeren. Meanwhile, Club Brugge have taken just 6 points from their last 7 games. 

Zulte Waregem took the lead on 12 minutes thanks to a Harbaoui penalty. The spot kick was awarded after Club Brugge’s Nakamba had brought down Bongonda inside the box. There were chances for Club to equalize. Vanaken missed a sitter and a couple of minutes later saw his effort hit the crossbar. Bongonda put Zulte Waregem 2-0 up a minute before half time.

Things went from bad to worse for Club in the second half when Bongonda scored his second and Zulte Waregem’s third goal of the evening 6 minutes in. Club Brugge’s only goal of the evening came thanks to an own goal by their former player Davy De fauw. De fauw deflected a Vormer free kick past Bossut and it was 1-3 on 73. Club Brugge pushed forward but were unable to score. At the other end there was a chance for Harbaoui.

Nevertheless, the score remained 1-3 to Zulte Waregem, a result that sees them climb up to 13th place with 15 points from 16 games. Club Brugge remain second with 31 points. Club Brugge could slip back a couple of places depending on the result of the games involving 3rd placed RFC Antwerp and 4th placed RSC Anderlecht.
