Genk’s lead widens, Anderlecht sack coach after another defeat

It was an exciting day of football in the Belgian First Division on Sunday. In the first of the day’s three matches Sporting Anderlecht lost 2-1 away at Cercle Brugge. The result proved to be the final straw for the Anderlecht board and on Sunday evening it was announced that the club’s first team coach Hein Vanhaezebrouck had been sacked. Later KRC Genk’s 2-0 home win against KV Oostende saw them go 7 points clear of the top. In the 8pm kick-off Standard de Liège’s fans were treated to excellent display by their team that beat Zulte Waregem 4-1.

Sporting Anderlecht lost their second game in a row. This time it was Cercle Brugge that was able to take all three points against a lackluster Anderlecht. Kylian Hazard (photo below) gave Cercle the lead with a 9th minute goal.

Pieter Gerkens equalized for Anderlecht on 22 minutes and the first half ended 1-1.  The winning goal came from a Gianni Bruno penalty on 58 minutes. The result leaves Sporting Anderlecht 4th with 31 points from 19 games. Cercle Brugge are 9th with 25 points.

Genk 7 points clear after 2-0 win

The result means that KRC Genk were the only top 5 team to win during the weekend. After 19 games KRC Genk have 42 points. KV Oostende are 12th with points.

Strong Standard enjoy a convincing win

Standard de Liège’s loyal fans were given an early Christmas present on Sunday. Not only did Standard enjoy a convincing 4-1 win at home against Zulte Waregem, but they did so in style with attractive, entertaining football.

Two first half goals from Madhi Carcela (photo, below), the second of which from a beautifully-taken free-kick, meant that Standard were 2-0 up by half time. More goals were to come in the second half with Renaud Emond doing the honours on 57 minutes and on 68 minutes from the penalty spot. Mikael Soisalo’s goal for Zulte Waregem on 89 minutes was too little, too late for the visitors. After 19 games Standard de Liège are 7 with 30 points. Zulte Waregem are 13th with17 points.
