Thomas Cook and TUI cancel excursions to Cairo

The tour operators Thomas Cook and TUI have announced that they have suspended excursions to the Egyptian capital Cairo for their customers that are holidaying in other parts of Egypt. Neither tour operator has any Belgian customers that are currently staying in Cairo.     

A bomb attack on a tourist bus near to the Giza pyramids south of Cairo on Friday cost the lives of four people and left twelve people injured.

Egypt is a popular destination for Belgian tourists. However, none of the customers of the two biggest tour operators here TUI and Thomas Cook are staying in the Egyptian capital.

TUI doesn’t fly to Cairo. However, it does organize excursions to the city. These have now been suspended until further notice.

TUI’s spokesman Piet Demeyere told journalists that “Generally speaking our customers don’t choose these excursions. They come for the sun and the sea.

Thomas Cook had an excursion to Cairo planned for Saturday. This has now been put "on hold". "We will wait until we have more information a spokesperson for the company told journalists.
