Just 45 of the 300 Flemish Mayors are women

According to figures from the Flemish Christian democrats’ women’s organisation Vrouw en Maatschappij (Women and Society) just 15% Mayors in Flanders' 300 municipalities are women. In Brussels this is just 5.27% with Sint-Jans-Molenbeek being the only one of the capital’s 19 municipalities that has a female Mayor.

The figures on the number of female Mayors in Flanders’ 300 municipalities appear in an article in Monday’s edition of the daily ‘De Standaard’.

Vrouw en Maatschappij’s Coordinator Katrien Symons told the paper that “We are very disappointed with this result”. The organisation now intends to look at how many female Alderman there are in municipal and city cabinets in our region.

"These figures show that there are still issues of perception surrounding women in politics. We see that people are still more inclined to give a preference vote to a male rather than to a female politician. In seems that people still think that men make more competent politicians than women do”.
